About

Hello! I am an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Iowa.

My research explores the interactions of food and agriculture within the global economy.  I'm especially interested in questions about how societies around the world have come to understand concepts of "biodiversity" and "biocultural heritage." I have an expertise in the politics of genetically modified crops (the subject of my dissertation research) and I have spent many years speaking with regulators, scientists, chefs, Indigenous leaders, politicians, and farmers across Latin America to better understand this issue. I also study potatoes in Peru, their center of origin.

I received my  Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2022. I also hold a M.P.P. from the University of Minnesota, and a B.A. in Economics from Whitman College.  Prior to my graduate studies, I worked as a program evaluator with the State of Minnesota and as a research analyst with Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) in Santiago, Chile.

Outside of academia, I am an active musician. I perform around town and for special events (classical, jazz, and old-style violin), and have also taught with the San Agustín Youth Orchestra in Oaxaca, Mexico. I grow specialty potatoes in northern Minnesota, and sit on the Board of Directors for Asociación ANDES in support of Peru's Potato Park.

You can find my CV here.
